"There is no shortage of resources in this world, what is lacking is the opportunity for minorities." Since more than a decade ago, I have had a vision that one day I would go to Uganda, Africa, and inspire the world through dance.
Inspired by the All The Way Live charity street dance carnival organised by our friends at Power Serge in the United States, a group of us street dancers started a little dream project to travel abroad every year as street dance volunteers to share the joy of dancing. For ten years, we have travelled to the Philippines, Vietnam, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Taiwan and other countries to help them organise street dance competitions and fly the best dancers to Taiwan to participate in the Taipei Bboy City World Street Dance Competition. During the week before and after the competition, we will go to orphanages, organizations in need of help or special schools in remote mountain areas to volunteer, teaching local children to draw and dance, spreading happiness and sharing love through street dance in the hope that they will be inspired by street dance.
Ten years later, I never thought we'd actually make it! When Ugandan dancer Bboy Bbosa stepped onto this beautiful island in Taiwan, you could feel his emotion every second of the day, and the unmistakable sense of freshness, it was really like the feeling of the African native "Lisu" coming from the desert to the city in the 80's movie "God is Crazy". I don't think we're doing a breakthrough project, we're just trying our best to live up to what Hip Hop culture has given us, bringing it back to the community and bringing people love & hope.
This year's Taipei Bboy City was also very special, with Greek Bboy Onel beating out many of the world's best to take the title. Second place went to Malaysia's Bboy LegoSam, two of the dark horses who have made a name for themselves in Taiwan, which is what we want for Taipei Bboy City, to showcase more of the best dancers in Asia and the world! Two of the best dancers from Ukraine, Bboy Lussysky & Bboy Kuzya, also did a great job in Taiwan that year! I look forward to seeing them again on the international stage in Taipei Bboy City Taiwan, and may there be no war in Ukraine!
